Ibadan, July 5, 2024. – Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and EnduroSat are jointly building Botswana’s first satellite, BOTSAT-1. The satellite, which is set to launch on SpaceX’s Transporter-13 mission no earlier than February 2025, will directly benefit Botswana’s agriculture and mining industries.

BOTSAT-1 will use its onboard hyperspectral camera to provide key information on soil and terrain content to inform decision-makers for long-term planning and investment. The mission also aims to generate practical technical and operational experience in Botswana.

Accordingly, BIUST engineers will join the EnduroSat team in Sofia to complete the satellite assembly and payload integration. BIUST will also take full advantage of the satellite’s flexible software architecture through SpaceOps software. EnduroSat and BIUST will also extend their collaboration beyond the completion of the mission to develop Botswana as a space hub and work to create exchange opportunities.

Commenting on this partnership, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo, Vice-Chancellor of Botswana International University of Science and Technology, commented: “EnduroSat has been an exceptional partner on our journey towards launching Botswana’s first satellite. Their expertise and support have been invaluable, and we are pleased with the progress we have made together.” Professor Totolo also added: “This partnership brings us closer to realising our shared vision and underlines the strength of our mutual commitment to advancing space technology in Botswana.”

Similarly, Raycho Raychev, Founder and CEO of EnduroSat, commented: “BIUST has tremendous growth potential and I am proud that they have chosen to partner with EnduroSat on this journey. Their team is incredibly dedicated and focused on making a positive impact. The fact that their organization has a long-term strategic vision for growth and they are strictly following it will enable them to build a formidable space program.”
