How to tell if an egg is fresh

If you want to know if an egg is fresh or spoiled, there is a very simple test you can do at home. All you need is a container and some water!

How to tell if an egg is bad

Place the egg in question in a bowl or glass of room temperature water. A fresh egg will sink and lie on its side, while an old egg will float.

If the egg sinks but is at an angle, it is not as fresh as one that is lying flat, but is most likely still safe to eat.

Why do bad eggs float in water?

Stale or spoiled eggs float because they have an air pocket inside them. As the egg ages, moisture leaves the egg and is replaced by air, which increases the size of the air bubble. If the air pocket becomes large enough, the egg will float.

Other ways to tell if an egg has gone bad

If you open an egg and it smells a little funny, it's probably bad and should be thrown away.

Shake the egg and listen carefully. If you can hear the insides moving, it's probably past its prime.

Shine a flashlight on the egg and look for cracks in the shell or air spaces inside.
