ReOrbit, a leading Helsinki-based provider of satellite software, has successfully completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) phase with the European Space Agency (ESA) for its UKKO mission, part of the InCubed programme.

For the InCubed UKKO Development and Demonstration of Technologies for Future Earth Observation (EO) Satellites activity, ReOrbit will conduct an In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) as an independent flight opportunity, showcasing the capabilities developed in the avionics architecture and software stack in space, i.e. an end-to-end EO value chain between EO payloads and end-users, as well as satellite-to-satellite and satellite-to-ground communication. Launch is scheduled for Q2 2025.

ReOrbit will achieve this by incorporating a fully operationally capable commercial optical payload from EO. ReOrbit will be responsible for end-to-end operations commissioning and validation, including imaging, onboard data processing, and data transfer to the customer site. Another important part of this mission is equipping the IOD bus with the optical terminal, accompanied by the autonomy, storage, and data transport capabilities required to ensure a safe and seamless data transfer from satellite to satellite or satellite to ground.

“The successful completion of the PDR is a significant milestone for UKKO. The review had to be incredibly detailed, so our plans for satellite integration, flight software, test, verification and operations meet key mission performance requirements and result in a safe and efficient satellite design,” said Sethu Saveda Suvanam, CEO and Founder of ReOrbit. “The UKKO mission represents a crucial step in validating our vision for the future of space applications, where transforming satellites into truly intelligent and interconnected platforms requires satellite systems to be software-defined, facilitating full network integration, from space to ground.”
