The Space Foundation announces the nomination period for the General James E. Hill Space Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented at the 2025 Space Symposium

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Sept. 4, 2024 — Space FoundationA nonprofit organization founded in 1983, providing education, collaboration and information for the global space ecosystem, is now accepting nominations for its most prestigious honor, the General James E. Hill Space Achievement Award.

Named in memory of General James E. Hill, USAF (Ret.), long-time President of the Space Foundation, this award honors individuals whose exceptional contributions over more than 20 years have significantly benefited humanity through space exploration, technological development, or the application of space resources in areas such as academia, culture, and industry.

Nominations will be accepted from September 4 through November 30, 2024. Anyone may nominate a candidate; self-nomination is not permitted. Nominees must demonstrate outstanding achievement recognized nationally or internationally by the Space Foundation Board of Directors. The award will be presented at the 40th Symposium on spacewhich will take place April 7-10, 2025 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

Recent recipients include:

  • 2024: Martin “Marty” C. Faga, former Deputy Secretary of the Air Force and Director of the NRO
  • 2023: Daniel S. Goldin, NASA's longest-serving administrator
  • 2022: Joanne Maguire, first executive vice president of Lockheed Martin
  • 2021: Patti Grace Smith, FAA official and advocate for private space travel
  • 2020: Eugene F. “Gene” Kranz, former NASA flight director

Candidates must meet at least two of the following criteria:

  • Advancement of space technology
  • Advancing human understanding of space
  • Contribution to public support for space projects
  • The formulation of government policies on space matters
  • Artistic interpretation of the meaning of space.
  • Design of durable space systems
  • Using space technology for the benefit of humanity

In addition, nominees must align with the Space Foundation's mission by meeting at least three of the following requirements:

  • Published works related to space exploration
  • Promoting space exploration through various means
  • Knowledge transfer to non-space related groups
  • Community or public service
  • Significant contribution to the Space Foundation's mission
