Will the upcoming Radeon RX 8800XT perform as well as the RTX 4080?

It's a week of big rumors, sometimes with spectacular twists and sometimes with information that emerges after several weeks of absolute calm. Such is the case with future AMD graphics cards based on rDNA 4Several previous rumors have hinted at AMD's desire to stop following Nvidia in a race to the top and instead offer affordable mid- to high-range products, with a top-end RX 8800XT costing no more than $700. The RDNA 4 release date has also been a topic, to the point where there were doubts about the cards arriving in 2024. MLID is setting the record straight with an update on the latest information it claims to have.

An RX 8800XT that matches the RTX 4080, but at half the price?

As mentioned above, the RX 8800 XT should be the pinnacle of the future RDNA 4 range. It will be based on the Navi 48 chip, with 64 compute units (CUs) or 4096 shader cores with clock speeds between 2.9 GHz and 3.2 GHz (in game). The card will feature “only” 16 GB of GDDR6 at 20 Gbit/s (as in The “new” RTX 4070) on a 256-bit bus.

In terms of performance, it would be on par with an RTX 4080… at least as far as rasterization is concerned. Ray tracing performance will be comparable to the RTX 4070 Ti/4070 Ti Super. The card is expected to sell for around $499-599 (€599-6999), while the RTX 4080 sells for upwards of $1,000/€1,200.

Mass availability in the last quarter?

There is conflicting information here too, but we are already getting used to Nvidia and AMD's game of deception regarding their respective timelines. For example, Nvidia is said to have complacently leaked that the RTX 50 will not arrive before 2025… Our little finger does not quite agree with this. But as for the RX 8800 XT, it would be “available in large quantities in the last quarter of 2024”. This would mean a reference card, but also several versions from AMD's partner brands. In the latter case, this would mean that the GPUs would be delivered at least at the end of September… Wait and see.
