Black Myth: Wukong It is, like Our review He said, both confused and spectacular. It's an action RPG with a soulsy feel that has many of the usual elements of the genre (experience and skill trees, checkpoints that save your progress and at the same time make enemies respawn) and, at the same time, gives them a unique touch.
Our Black Myth: Wukong The Beginner's Guide will help you begin your journey (to the West) as the Destined One with tips from our first 15 hours with the game. We've got hints and tips on the level layouts, the (confusing) crafting mechanics, fast travel, and your gear.
There is actually no gameplay loop in Black Myth: WukongYou'll travel from one shrine checkpoint to the next, taking out enemy yaoguais (demons) along the way, but there's not much effort involved. Instead, you'll focus more on getting from one boss fight to the next – there's a batch of bosses and boss-type enemies.
That linearity is also reflected in your armor and weapons. You don't unlock them, but simply reach a certain shrine and crafting recipes for new gear will automatically unlock (more on that below). The same goes for spells – you're given them after defeating certain bosses.
That being said, you don't want to rush from shrine to shrine because…
You must be careful on secondary roads.
While overall progress is fairly linear, the routes between shrine checkpoints have branching paths that are almost always worth exploring. You'll usually find at least one chest or even an optional boss fight.
Those boss fights will also give you a lot of experience, and usually some rare upgrade materials as well. At the very least, you'll find some ingredients that will come in handy… sooner or later.
You can't craft medicine until chapter 2.
As you progress through the game, you'll find many ingredients, such as plants and mushrooms. Their descriptions will even say that they “can be used to make medicine,” but you won't be able to make anything with them.
And that's because it's a mechanic that isn't unlocked until Chapter 2, several hours after starting the game.
Very early in Black Myth: Wukongyou will encounter an enemy called the Wandering Wight. The first time you encounter him, you will not be able to defeat him. (Well, it is possible(but that's not going to happen.) The trick to that fight, however, is that the way forward is to get past the enemy. You just have to run past him.
That won't work in most fights, but it's an important lesson about how the game works: you'll become much more powerful and have more abilities to use as you progress (linearly).
If you encounter a difficult enemy or boss, you can always come back later when you're a bit stronger. Which brings us to…
Fast travel is strange without a map
You can (fast) travel from any shrine to any other shrine you've previously visited, but there's no map, so it's a bit awkward at first.
When you decide to travel, you'll only be given a list with the names of the shrines and their region. However, the names are descriptive enough, so it's not too difficult to figure out where you're going.
As you progress through Black Myth: Wukong And if you defeat bosses, you'll unlock new gear to craft at shrines. You'll only fight with one weapon (several versions of a staff), so it's pretty easy to get the hang of it. Clothing (equipment for the head, body, legs, and arms) is a bit more interesting.
Clothing has unique effects that you gain by wearing it. These include things like damage bonuses or speed boosts. Some gear has a number next to the unique effect, indicating how many pieces of that gear set you need to wear to activate the unique effect.
There are secrets (that grant rewards)
While Black Myth: Wukong While it's mostly linear, you'll find several secrets off the beaten path. Some of these are reward vessels – accessories that grant useful benefits.
