Intel cancels its 20A node and focuses on 18A!

On Intel's side, we learn that the company has simply cancelled its 20A etching process. The company wants to focus on its finer 18A process, which already looks promising. However, this cancellation is not without consequences for Arrow Lake.

20A cancelled, Arrow Lake produced by other foundries, but assembled by Intel!

Nvidia

At first glance, this may seem like bad news, but it's not really. In fact, the 20A played a crucial role in the development of the 18A, because it successfully allowed the integration of new transistors, the famous RibbonFet, which we mentioned earlier. here.

Meanwhile, the 18A is quite advanced, as it is already operational, with chips etched using this process that are already capable of running operating systems. As for performance, they are considered to be quite good… Although…

However, this cancellation has not been without consequences for Intel, as Arrow Lake production has had to be moved to other foundries, including TMSC and Samsung. However, the newcomers will be involved in the production of their CPU assembling them at Intel Foundry.

In the meantime, resources from the cancelled process have been redirected to the 18A project, which should continue its development in good conditions. If all goes well, we can expect a launch in 2025.
