The beloved Rodecaster board gets a counterpart for video production

Like much of the podcasting world, We loved it The Rodecaster Pro when it launched in late 2018. It’s been a half-dozen years, but microphone maker Rode is finally extending the easy-to-use line into the world of video.

Rodecaster's video It faces much stiffer competition than the original Pro board. In this video-first, post-pandemic era, many have launched similar devices. It also has a hefty price tag to compete with: $1,119, nearly double the Pro’s $600 asking price.

Rode is looking to appeal to the same category of newbies it attracted with the first Pro: effectively, those who are interested in upping their game at video production but aren't ready to commit to a full-blown professional rig.

While the Pro is focused exclusively on in-person audio podcasts, the Video covers a broader spectrum, spanning from individual Twitch streamers to multi-person studio video productions. The new model is more compact than the original, as it’s meant to sit in front of a computer, rather than in the middle of a podcasting desk.

It features a pair of Neutrik connectors with XLR microphone preamps, along with four HDMI and two USB-C inputs, allowing users to switch between video sources in real time. Audio processing, meanwhile, includes an EQ, along with a compressor, high-pass filter, de-esser, and noise gate.

It can automatically activate green and blue screens, switch audio between video sources, and stream to “all major platforms” over Wi-Fi or via wired Ethernet and USB. It can also record directly to a connected external hard drive.

“For decades, our mission has been to provide creators with affordable, professional audio equipment,” said CEO Damien Wilson in a statement. “Groundbreaking innovations like Rodecaster Pro and Wireless GO have changed the way people approach content creation across multiple categories, putting studio-quality audio solutions within reach of today’s creators. With Rodecaster Video, we’re doing the same for video production.”

The Rodecaster video is available for pre-order starting today. It will ship on October 10th.
