The idea behind this worksheet is for children to take it outside, listen to the sounds around them, and mark the things they can hear.
There are three worksheets to choose from: things I can hear at the beach, in the woods, and a general one.
How do we hear noise?
The simple explanation
Sounds are produced when an object vibrates and sends waves of energy toward our ears. The stronger the vibrations, the louder the noise. When the vibrations in the air reach the ear, they shake tiny hairs connected to nerves. These nerves send a message to the brain to let it know that a noise has been heard.
Let's make it a little more complicated.
Sound waves reach the eardrum and make it vibrate.
The vibrations of the eardrum are transmitted to small bones in the ear called ossiclesthen through the semicircular channels Yet the cochlea.
The cochlea converts the vibrations into electrical signals that are sent to the brain.
The brain interprets the signals as sounds.
More activities about sounds and hearing
Make a eardrum model by stretching plastic wrap over a bowl and placing rice or salt on top. When a noise is heard, the salt or rice will jump out.
