Will Microsoft disable your computer if you share fake news?

Does Microsoft plan to disable your computer if you post or share fake news or misinformation?

Take a look at the viral claim and find out what the facts really are!

Affirm: Microsoft will disable your computer if you share fake news!

People are sharing an article (archive) by The people's voice (before NewsPunch), which claims that Microsoft plans to disable your computer if you post or share fake news/misinformation.

Is Interpol investigating Bill Gates for murder?

TRUE : Microsoft won't disable your computer if you share fake news!

This is another example of FAKE NEWS created/promoted by The people's voiceand here are the reasons why…

Fact #1: Microsoft did not announce plans to disable computers

Let me start by pointing out that Microsoft has not announced any plans to disable the computers of people who share “unconventional” content online, in an attempt to combat “misinformation” in the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election.

If Microsoft had actually announced such plans, it would have been major news covered by media outlets around the world. It would also have gone viral on social media, with conservative and right-wing personalities criticizing these plans.

Microsoft certainly made no such announcement, and The people's voice Offered no evidence to support their claim of “verified facts.”

Fact #2: Satya Nadella is the CEO of Microsoft, not Bill Gates

Curiously, The people's voice The article used a photo of Bill Gates, even though he handed over day-to-day operations at Microsoft more than 15 years ago. He also resigned as president of Microsoft when Satya Nadella was named CEO in February 2014.

If Microsoft really plans to disable computers to combat fake news, that decision would have to be approved by its CEO and president, Satya Nadella. Not its former founder, Bill Gates.

How does Bill Gates intervene in this “story”? Nothing in the article even remotely suggests that Bill Gates is in any way involved in the affairs of Microsoft, or in the non-existent plan to disable the computers of people who share fake news/misinformation.

Fact #3: Satya Nadella never said anything about disabling computers

The people's voice The article used a video of NBC News' Lester Holt interviewing Satya Nadella as evidence that Microsoft plans to disable the computers of people who share misinformation. However, that is completely absurd.

He NBC News Video it only shows Satya Nadella saying that the tech industry is using technological solutions such as watermarking (AI-created content), deepfake detection, and implementing content IDs to combat misinformation and disinformation.

This is not the first election in which we have faced disinformation or propaganda campaigns by adversaries and electoral interference.

We're doing all the work across the tech industry around watermarking, deepfake detection, and content IDs. Frankly, there will be enough and more technology to be able to identify problems related to misinformation and disinformation.

Fact #4: Microsoft can't “magically” disable computers remotely

Even if Microsoft wants it, disabling a computer remotely isn't like waving a magic wand or singing “Abracadabra.”

With the possible exception of specifically hacking your computer to gain access or tricking you into installing malware, Microsoft cannot remotely disable your computer simply because you shared fake news or misinformation.

The people's voice The article certainly offers no explanation as to how Microsoft could possibly disable your computer remotely… like magic!

Fact #5: La Voz del Pueblo is known for publishing fake news

The people's voice is the current name of NewsPunchwho possibly changed his name because his brand has been completely discredited after publishing numerous shocking but false stories.

Founded as Your news wire In 2014, it was renamed NewsPunch in November 2018, before becoming The people's voice. A 2017 BuzzFeed report identified NewsPunch as the second largest source of popular fake news on Facebook that year.

Their articles have been periodically debunked as fake news, so you should never share anything from NewsPunch / The people's voice. Here are some of their fake stories that I verified previously:
