SpaceX experienced the first-ever full-stack ignition abort in Starship's history on July 16, 2026. During the launch attempt, only 29 of 33 Raptor engines on Super Heavy Booster 20 ignited, triggering an automatic abort. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed "Some of the engines didn't start" and that two Raptor engines would be removed and replaced. After rolling back to the production site, SpaceX is now targeting NET Thursday July 23 at 5:45 PM CDT (22:45 UTC). Flight 13 is the second flight of Starship Version 3 — the rocket NASA will use for Artemis crewed moon landings. It will be the first flight to carry 20 Starlink V3 next-generation internet satellites, which have never flown before. Super Heavy will target a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico; Ship will target a splashdown off Western Australia. Separately, SpaceX successfully launched Starlink 17-39 (its 85th Falcon 9 of 2026) from Vandenberg on July 21, a day after a rare Falcon 9 post-ignition abort on July 20.
Northrop Grumman's Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV-1), built with DARPA and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) payload, launches on Falcon 9 from SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral today (July 21) with a window opening at 5:15 PM EDT. Following launch, MRV-1 will maneuver to geosynchronous orbit (35,786 km) where it will use robotic arms to service, inspect, repair, relocate, and extend the operational lives of client satellites — and install Mission Extension Pods (MEP "jetpacks") to give aging satellites new life. The mission is planned to last a decade, potentially servicing dozens of GEO satellites. It marks a new era of on-orbit robotic servicing — a capability that could save billions in satellite replacement costs and opens a new commercial frontier.
