AMD’s XOC (Extreme Overclocking) team recently held a live demo to showcase the overclocking capabilities and resulting performance of the new Ryzen 9 9950X processor. During the event, the team managed to achieve a Cinebench score of 55K, enough to top the HWBOT global leaderboard.
Gamer Nexus was one of the lucky few to watch the event live, and in a video posted today, the AMD XOC (extreme overclocking) team put the soon-to-be-released flagship through extensive overclocking scenarios to surpass the current 16-core Cinebench R23 and R16 world records.
To achieve the impressive Cinebench scores boasted, the team had to overclock the Ryzen 9 9950X to 6.6GHz, consuming around 552W of power. As you can imagine, the XOC team needed liquid nitrogen to reach the dizzying clock speed heights seen in Gamer Nexus’ video, with CPU temperatures dropping to around minus 90 degrees Celsius (pot temp).

To achieve this, the overclocking enthusiasts used an ASUS X670E ROG Crosshair Gene motherboard, a custom-designed board that is widely used by extreme overclockers. Additionally, two DDR5 DIMMs were used along with AMD Ryzen Master and a custom AMD application created by ASUS.
The team behind the flagship CPU’s overclocking managed to achieve a Cinebench score of 55296, around 31% more than the stock configuration (41924). The Cinebench scores would have seen the flagship CPU top the HWBOT rankings had they been published. The Ryzen 9 9950X is currently listed in Cinebench R23 in seventh position, well behind several of Intel’s competing 13th and 14th gen flagships. That said, published clock speeds for the 9950X on that particular run were between 4.3 and 5.7GHz, well behind the 6.6GHz posted during AMD’s live event.
How does the Ryzen 9 9950x compare to previous generations?
It may not all be swings, roundabouts, and liquid nitrogen world records for the upcoming Zen 5 flagship, however, as some enthusiasts are already pointing out the relatively lackluster improvement in stock performance compared to the last-gen lineup.
When comparing the stock Ryzen 9 9950X, it apparently only offers a 5% performance increase compared to the brand's last-gen flagship 7950X, which scored 36,517 in the same Cinebench R23 tests.
Several tweets have also pointed out that the Ryzen 9 9950X has a huge increase in PPT (Package Power Tracking), up to 1000W. In comparison, the 7950X hovers around 230W.
All in all, it's an impressive feat from the AMD XOC team, which should be official when the product is officially launched. That said, it will be interesting to see how these latest numbers affect potential sales, as there's a lot of buzz about X, seemingly disappointed by the generational shift.
