In 60 seconds, $35,000 was stolen from the Apple Store!

At approximately 4:17 pm on Friday, November 25, 2022, a pair of thieves brazenly stole $35,000 worth of Apple products in front of customers and employees at the Apple Store in Palo Alto, California!

The Black Friday robbery showed two masked men removing several iPhones and MacBook laptops from display tables and stuffing them into their bags, while shoving past customers and store workers.

In the video, a customer can be heard asking, “Should we stop them?” and an Apple Store worker responds, “Let them go.”

The minute-long video shows how quickly the two thieves managed to “take over the room” and steal all the Apple devices.

Although neither customers nor store workers challenged them, one of the robbers “made a general statement to the crowd about physical violence” if they tried to stop the robbery.

That upgraded the crime from a mere “shoplifting” to a robbery, according to police, who confirmed that Apple phones and laptops worth about $35,000 were taken.

One of the suspects was wearing a beige hoodie with blue jeans, white shoes and a red backpack, while the other was wearing a blue camouflage hoodie with black Adidas pants, red shoes and a black Adidas backpack.

Police are currently searching for both men, described as black males between 19 and 20 years old, who fled in a red Mazda hatchback and were last seen by a security guard driving north on Highway 101 around 4:30 p.m.

The Apple store in Palo Alto has been burglarized three times in recent years. In 2018, it was burglarized twice in 24 hours, with thieves making off with more than $100,000 worth of goods, while in 2016, thieves vandalized the store with a rental car and made off with thousands of dollars worth of Apple products.

What Apple is doing to reduce shoplifting

Because its products are considered high value, its Apple stores in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland and Washington DC have been targets of major thefts.

As a result, Apple has initiated several measures to make it more difficult for thieves to sell their haul of stolen Apple devices.

For example, demo devices like the ones just stolen from the Palo Alto Apple store would have been registered with an Apple ID and could therefore be easily tracked using the find my iphone service.

These demo devices also have proximity software installed since 2016, which automatically disables them once they are removed from their assigned Apple Store.

Apple also has the ability to disable and track stolen devices, even those that are new and unused. Those who have purchased them will find that their devices cannot be turned off and their location will be sent to local authorities.

Stolen iPhones will also display a warning to the user, informing them that the device has been disabled and is being tracked, and that local authorities have been alerted. The user is advised to return the iPhone to the Apple Store from which it was stolen.

Please return it to Apple Walnut Street

This device has been deactivated and is being tracked. Local authorities will be notified.

This makes these stolen devices practically useless if the thieves intend to sell them to other people. However, they may find some use as spare parts at a much lower profit, of course.

Apple is also blocking access to repairs for lost or stolen devices. For starters, Apple will refuse to repair iPhones if the Find My iPhone feature can't be turned off (to prove ownership).

Additionally, Apple repair technicians can now see if an iPhone has been reported lost or stolen in the internal MobileGenius or GXS system. If the device has been reported lost or stolen, they will refuse to repair it.

All of these measures will make the viral robbery of $35,000 at the Apple store in Palo Alto seem like a small thing for thieves.

In fact, Apple is the winner of this theft: its demo devices would surely have been insured. In a way, Apple “sold” the stolen $35,000 worth of inventory to its insurance company!
