Time makes us all ridiculous: nine years have passed since the release of The Witcher 3, far surpassing the eight-year gap between the now positively primitive (but it's still magical) Witcher 1 and Geralt's praised third outing. I remember being much more excited about Dragon Age: Inquisition at the time, which is funny considering which one I keep replaying every two years or so. When I finally bought The Witcher 3 during my winter break at the end of the year (the GPU Punisher running at 720p, 30fps, with my beefy college laptop hooked up to my parents' TV), it ended up being the first game. I lost track of time and played until 4 in the morning in I don't know how many years.
It's just one of the best examples of an open world RPG, where every quest is worthwhile and every detail is personalized and meaningful. Geralt of Rivia, the cover of the fantasy novel, the bad boy with the heart of a poet and a grumpy but tender father streak, has reached the levels of Solid Snake as a video game mascot, and the rest of the game's charming cast is not far. behind him.
While the blood and wine expansion—basically a new epilogue final act with its own open world map—receives a lot of praise, the smaller Stone hearts He was always the real winner in my book. He had the perfect mix of recognizable fable Witchcraft—in this case Doctor Faustus—mixed with something a little stranger, low fantasy, almost pagan in nature. The affable avatar of pure evil, Gaunter O'Dimm, remains an all-time video game villain in my book.
So The Witcher 3: It's worth all the hype, and if you somehow haven't played it yet, $13 for the full kit and kaboodle is a bargain. This offer and the anniversary also fall just one day early. CD Project is ready to release a version of its REDkit Modification Tools for The Witcher 3, as it already did with Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 3 modding community has already done some amazing things even without that power at their fingertips, and I can't wait to see what they'll be capable of moving forward.
