Fantastic Neodimension marks the reunion of Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi with Square Enix and legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu. The multidimensional RPG is coming to Xbox Series X|S on December 5, 2024.
Fantastic Neodimension Players take on the role of Leo on his journey to recover his lost memories and solve the mystery of a strange mechanical infection that is destroying his world. Fans of turn-based RPGs and classic Final Fantasy games can look forward to a satisfying battle system with an incredible original story brought to life by Sakaguchi, with beautiful music by renowned composer Uematsu.
It's a big moment for the genre, as a team that has created some of the most enduring classic RPGs ever published is reunited. Here's what you need to know:
Who is Hironobu Sakaguchi?
If you're a fan of JRPGs, you may have heard the name Hironobu Sakaguchi. Affectionately known as the “Father of Final Fantasy” due to his involvement with the first 10 mainline Final Fantasy games, Sakaguchi is known for his expertise in helping create and inspire what RPGs have become today, creating new worlds with engaging stories and engaging turn-based gameplay mechanics.
Sakaguchi started out at Square Enix (formerly Square) before founding his company Mistwalker Corporation in 2004, where they released titles with cult followings such as Blue dragon, Lost Odyssey and Ground BattleAs a developer, Sakaguchi loves creating games that serve as an evolution of previous works, and always seeks to bring something new to the table with each of his projects. Handmade dioramas
When creating the original FancySakaguchi thought it would be interesting to play a game where you could explore a real-life diorama. So he and his team set out to create over 150 charming hand-crafted dioramas to serve as background environments for 3D animated characters to explore, resulting in a unique visual look for the game.
A modern turn-based RPG
Sakaguchi's desire to create a unique gaming experience also resulted in the original, modern take on turn-based battle systems in Fantastic NeodimensionThis game features unique systems that revolutionize the classic RPG formula and create a fun and satisfying combat system.
- Skills Pathways – Allows you to attack enemies in straight or curved lines. Observing the turn order and position of enemies on the battlefield, along with choosing the right skills and trajectory, can help you eliminate multiple enemies in one turn.
- Dimengeon System – The Dimengeon system is a unique feature that offers a new way to deal with random encounters, streamlining combat and allowing you to explore environments uninterrupted. Early in the game, Leo discovers a Dimengeon machine that allows him to trap enemies he’s previously encountered in a dimensional dungeon, aptly named the Dimengeon. Using this tool, you can fight all of the enemies you’ve captured in the Dimengeon at any one time. However, once the Dimengeon machine is full, you’ll have to fight all of the enemies stored there at once. Deciding to fight a smaller group of enemies or an entire machine involves a level of strategy and planning to ensure your victory.
- Dimengeon Cheats – While fighting enemies in Dimengeon, Dimengeon Tricks may appear. You can attack them to receive various effects, such as increased attack power or extra turns. Aim Dimengeon Tricks next to enemies using your Skill Paths to make the most of your player turns and gain an advantage in battle.
Memorable music
Previously, I mentioned that Fantasian Neo Dimension features music by Nobuo Uematsu. If you're not familiar with him, he's also considered a legend in the industry thanks to his involvement in composing music tracks for several Final Fantasy installments, as well as other games over the years. If you haven't heard his work yet, you're in for a treat!
What's new
The original release of Fancy In 2021, it was an Apple Arcade exclusive that received critical acclaim. Following the release, Sakaguchi wanted to make the game available to a wider audience. Thanks to a growing relationship with Naoki Yoshida, Head of Creative Studio 3 at Square Enix, the team behind Final Fantasy XIV Online and Final Fantasy XVI, Fantastic Neodimension was born.
This enhanced version of the original release comes with all-new features, including English and Japanese voice acting, an additional difficulty option, and 4K support for Xbox Series X. These new features, coupled with availability to a wider audience, bring Sakaguchi’s true vision for the title to life.
