Nothing has announced a new phased firmware release for its flagship Phone 2 this week, including new features as well as improvements and bug fixes.

Additionally, the status bar icons can now be customized with new options that can be accessed through display settings on the Phone 2. Google's latest June security patch is the other notable thing added with the new update.

  • Optimized compatibility with some carrier networks.
  • Improved operator naming user interface.

The latest firmware version refines the ChatGPT integration from the previous update to the Phone 2, which will likely improve the overall experience of the AI service. The new update also fixes an issue that prevented cloned apps from working while on a VPN network.

The other issues fixed include lock screen widgets occasionally not appearing and back gestures that sometimes lacked haptic feedback. Lastly, general stability improvements will be seen with OS 2.5.6 on Phone 2.

While the Phone 2 receives regular updates it is a welcome move by Nothing, its CEO Carl Pei has declared that its successor, the Phone 3, will not arrive this year, breaking the company's annual schedule of flagship launches. The CEO further mentioned that Nothing has been “designing and prototyping AI interactions,” which will likely be improved and seen in the Phone 3, whose launch has now been postponed to next year.

“It's important that we have the right product, integrating hardware and artificial intelligence in a way that is useful and makes people smile,” Pei added in his recent post on X.
