WHERE IS JUPITER NOW?

🌌
Current Viewing Status
Excellent evening visibility! Jupiter blazes in the western sky after sunset — the second-brightest planet after Venus. Look for the brilliant silver-white point above Venus in the west. Jupiter and Venus made a spectacular "double planet" pairing on June 9, 2026. Jupiter's 4 Galilean moons are visible in binoculars — watch them move night to night.

About Jupiter

ABOUT JUPITER

Jupiter is the undisputed king of the Solar System — so massive its gravity shaped the entire system, deflecting asteroids and comets that might otherwise hit the inner planets. It contains more mass than all other planets combined (twice over). If it were ~80× more massive it would have ignited as a star.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot — a storm larger than Earth raging for at least 350 years — is slowly shrinking but remains iconic. Jupiter's fast rotation (under 10 hours) creates powerful jet streams and its distinctive banded cloud structure.

With 95 confirmed moons, Jupiter is a Solar System within a Solar System. The four large Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto) — discovered by Galileo in 1610 — remain the most studied worlds beyond Earth. Europa, with its vast subsurface liquid water ocean, is considered the best candidate for extraterrestrial life in the Solar System. NASA's Europa Clipper, launched October 2024, arrives in 2031 for 50+ close flybys.

KEY FEATURES

🔴
Great Red Spot
A storm that has raged for 350+ years — currently ~1.3× Earth's diameter. Wind speeds reach 640 km/h (400 mph). It's been slowly shrinking since the 1800s but remains the Solar System's most iconic storm.
🌊
Europa's Ocean
Europa's global ocean of liquid water is estimated ~100 km deep — holding more water than all Earth's oceans combined. Interacts with a rocky seafloor, potentially creating the chemistry needed for life. Europa Clipper arrives 2031.
🌋
Io's Volcanism
Io is the most volcanically active body in the Solar System — 400+ active volcanoes constantly resurface it. Tidal squeezing by Jupiter's gravity and the other Galilean moons generates the internal heat.
Powerful Auroras
Jupiter has the most energetic auroras in the Solar System — hundreds of times more powerful than Earth's Northern Lights. They circle the poles continuously, powered by Io's volcanic material falling into Jupiter's enormous magnetic field.

SPACE MISSIONS

NASA
Europa Clipper
Launched October 2024, arriving at Jupiter system 2031. Will perform 50+ Europa flybys studying its ocean, ice shell, and habitability. Most expensive planetary science mission ever built.
● Active
NASA
Juno (2016–present)
Orbiting Jupiter since 2016. Revealed deep interior structure, measured the gravitational field, and is now on extended mission flying past the Galilean moons.
● Active
NASA / ESA
Galileo (1995–2003)
First dedicated Jupiter orbiter. Discovered Europa ocean evidence. Dropped an atmospheric probe into Jupiter's clouds. Ended by intentional deorbit to protect Europa from contamination.
