AMD Announces Entry-Level Epyc 4004 Series CPUs for Small Businesses

This week, AMD introduced the new 4004 series, which should be the latest Epyc-branded Zen 4 processors. These CPUs come in a budget AM5 socket and range from a 16-core chip to just four cores, along with two V-Cache models. They are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses that run servers but can't afford or need a Threadripper CPU or a data center-focused Epyc chip with a ton of cores.

He 4004 family It includes eight CPUs, six traditional chip designs, and two V-Cache models. These are all single-socket processors that offer 28 lanes of PCIe Gen 5 connectivity. They only support two DDR5 memories per installation, so the maximum capacity is 192 GB. Supported memory speeds max out at DDR5-5200. Thermals should also be relatively easy to manage because several of the chips offer a TDP of 65W, which should help keep costs (and temperatures) down. The 16-core, 32-thread flagship CPU has a TDP of 170W, but it's an outlier in the family, as even the V-Cache CPUs have a modest 120W TDP.

AMD says these chips are aimed at people without a big budget, but who need to run a server and want more cache, connectivity, and security than a consumer CPU offers. They should be extremely competitive against Intel's current Xeon offerings, which do not include quad-core processors and bottom out with eight cores. The Epyc 4004 chips also have a slight cache advantage over Intel's Xeon offerings.

AMD will sell 4004-based systems from its OEM suppliers, who will offer pre-assembled servers. The announcement confirms a previous rumor about the existence of these chips, as it is the first time that AMD offers server chips in a consumer socket. They will also likely be the last Zen 4 CPUs to be released. AMD is expected to reveal the Zen 5 Epyc “Turin” CPU at Computex, which starts in just two weeks.
