Aesthetics and Functionality

For those who loved the MMX 300 Pro, you’ll be happy to know that beyerdynamic didn’t change much in terms of looks. They kept the classic black design, with plush black ear cushions and orange accents. Gamers will appreciate the comfort of the design, which is designed for hours of use. Wearing them for testing was a breeze, and even with glasses on, they didn’t tire me out or hurt my head. Setting up the headphones was also a breeze, as there was just one cable to plug into my device to start listening. I used a small portable DAC/Amp to elevate the sound, the KA11 from FiiO, but these could have been used with the included 3.5mm jack for easier use.

Listening review

Sound scene

The look may have remained relatively the same, but the sound has a distinctly different profile. Open-back headphones are known for their wide soundstage and immersive sound, and that’s certainly true of the MMX 330. These headphones don’t feature active noise cancellation, but what they lack in that department they make up for in design. A lot of ambient noise is filtered out thanks to the on-ear design, which covers the ear completely. You hear some pass-through noise when there’s no music playing, but once you start listening, you’re fully immersed. Beyerdynamic touts stellar balance between highs and lows, and it sounds great across a number of dynamic genres and gaming tracks. These are ideal for home gaming setups, especially in quiet environments. You’ll easily be mesmerized by your gameplay with how the soundscape and imaging detail allow you to get right into the game.

Low frequencies

The MMX 330s are equipped with a powerful, but not overwhelming, low end. I’ve found that some open-back headphones can lose some of their low end quality due to noise cancellation being removed from the equation, but these still have a powerful, punchy low end. Listening to some movie soundtracks and video game tracks, I liked how present the low ends were and how they were a great foundation for the rest of the frequencies.

Midrange Frequencies

The midrange is very clear and detailed. You can hear all the layers and timbres of the instruments as you listen. Sound effects and video game soundtracks have incredible detail, and vocals are at the forefront of any track. This is great for people who need to hear dialogue in-game or just like to enjoy a variety of vocal performances. There is no confusion between frequencies, and the flow from one range to the other is smooth. The clear midrange combined with exceptional stereo imaging puts the headphones in a high-quality range.

High frequencies

The highs are incredibly detailed and bring excellent balance to the entire sound signature. They’re crisp and bright, and the way they sound natural feeds into the immersive quality. The high frequencies aren’t too bright as to be fatiguing, and they’re still present despite the pass-through noise that comes with open-back headphones. I was listening to some classical guitar and some glitchy pop effects, and I was really pleased with how the whole sound came through naturally and clearly. For immersive gamers, the sound will feel natural and like it’s coming from the room you’re in.

Summary

Beyerdynamic has a great track record of consistency. The MMX 300 Pro was a hit in the gaming world, so it’s only fitting that the MMX 330 Pro will follow suit with the same results. Gamers and casual listeners alike will love the open-back design, perfect for solo play and immersive gaming.
