The Chromatic Change – The Poetry of Science

Through cloudy contours
The feathers shine –
mirrors of the sky that
change,
transform,
deploy.
Through bored corridors
of green warmth,
a melting pot of nuances
that deceives the light
to chart new paths.
The highlands retain their brilliance,
guardians of pigment
firmly grounded
to the cloying ground.
From tree to tree
and the sky to the sand,
feather writing
Each passage
above the edges
of the world.

This poem is inspired by recent researchwho has investigated the iridescent evolution of birds.

Many theories have been proposed to explain why birds have different colors depending on where they live and their evolutionary history. However, these theories often overlook whether the colors come from pigments (substances that absorb certain wavelengths of light) or from structural features (physical structures that reflect light in specific ways). The way colors are produced can significantly affect their role and evolution in birds.

In this research, scientists used data from a variety of sources, including geographic information and climate data, and examined more than 9,000 bird species around the world. Their goal was to understand how switching between pigment-based and structural colors affects the creation of new bird species and their distribution. The study found that birds with iridescent colors, which change and shimmer with different angles of light, spread rapidly to tropical regions. Meanwhile, non-iridescent species, whose colors do not change with angles of light, accumulated in the tropics both through movement to new areas and more rapid local evolution. This research provides new insights into the global distribution of bird colors and suggests future directions for studying color evolution in birds.
