On Thursday, the staff behind the upcoming anime adaptation of Witch hat workshop premiered the first trailer for the upcoming series at Anime Expo. First announced in 2023, the anime based on Kamome Shirahama's fantasy manga will be produced by animation studio Bug Films (Zom 100: Wishlist of the Dead) and directed by Ayumu Watanabe (Children of the sea, Brothers from space). That's not all: Yuka Kitamura, known for her work in Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twiceand the Dark Souls series, is responsible for composing the soundtrack for the series.
Witch hat workshop It follows the story of Coco, a seamstress's daughter who dreams of one day becoming a witch, despite her apparent inability to use magic. After a mysterious masked wizard gifts her with a spell book, Coco accidentally turns her own mother into stone and is rescued from a fire by Qifrey, a powerful wizard who accepts Coco as his new student. While Qifrey searches for those responsible for the incident, Coco begins her apprenticeship as a witch in his workshop.

The ongoing series, which has sold over 5.5 million copies as of July 2024 and won a Harvey Award and an Eisner Award in 2020, currently consists of 13 volumes. Shirahama’s manga is beloved for its intricate, detailed design, fantastical visuals, and densely imagined universe, so anticipation for the anime adaptation among fans of the series has been very high.
Fortunately, the first trailer for Witch hat workshop The series lives up to those expectations and more, with a gorgeous watercolor art style that looks like it's straight out of a storybook and a thrilling sequence of Qifrey holding Coco in his arms as she leaps from the burning rubble of their home. We can only hope the series lives up to this hype when it airs next year.
