Democrats ban Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies from 2024 platform, aligning with past hostility

The official Democratic Party platform for 2024 was released Today, on the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), without any mention of Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies. This decision aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s last four years of hostility towards the industry.

Despite the growing importance of Bitcoin and digital assets, neither Kamala Harris nor Tim Walz, who are running for president and vice president in the upcoming November elections, have prioritized the inclusion of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in the party agenda.

In contrast, the Republican Party has embraced Bitcoin and made it a central part of its platform. They have pledged to end what they describe as Democrats’ “illegal and un-American crackdown on cryptocurrencies” and oppose the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). Furthermore, the GOP is committed to protecting the right to mine Bitcoin, ensuring that Americans can self-custody their digital assets, and maintaining financial privacy in the face of government surveillance.

The Republican Platform 2024

The different approaches between the parties were further highlighted when Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speak at the Bitcoin 2024 Conference in Nashville, emphasizing her support for the industry. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, declined to speak or participate in the event.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. did too. talk at the Bitcoin 2024 Conference, expressing his support for Bitcoin, further underscoring the growing political divide on the issue.

As the 2024 election approaches, the absence of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies from the Democratic platform may influence the vote of the roughly 50 million Bitcoin and cryptocurrency holders across the country, who are looking for the best candidate to champion their cause.

Update: Fox Business' Eleanor Terrett reports that this party platform was approved before Joe Biden dropped out of the race, and DNC delegates will vote on the platform tonight “but it is expected to pass as written.”
