What is the best cookie for dipping?

Do you like to dip a cookie in a hot drink or a glass of milk? Do you think some cookies are better for dipping than others? Personally, I'm a big fan of the dipping chocolate digestif. The combination of melted chocolate and soft cookie is the best!

What makes a good dipping cookie?? Do you like to dip a cookie more than once or do you prefer to dip just once to give it the perfect melted texture?

We designed a research to find out what type of cookie is best for dipping. You can probably all agree that a cookie breaking and falling into your drink is never a good thing, so we placed six different cookies in hot water and timed how long it took for each one to collapse.

We chose to try typically British biscuits, but you can use any type you like.

Transparent cups

Warm water

Instructions

Carefully pour the same amount of warm water into each cup.

Place a cookie in each cup and start the timer. If the cookies are too wide, cut them in half. Each cookie should touch the bottom of the glass.

Start the timer and record how long it takes for each cookie to collapse.

Another way to do it is to place each cookie on a separate plate and pour the same amount of water into each one. Weigh the cookie before adding water and again five minutes after adding water. The cookie that absorbs the most water will be the one most likely to end up in your drink.

What is the best cookie for dipping?

We found that the shortbread cookie could be dipped the most times without breaking and was the last cookie to collapse in the glass of water test.

So if you want a sturdy cookie that can be dunked more than once, choose a shortbread-style cookie.

Extension tasks

Repeat the activity using cold water and compare the times with hot water.
